ABOUT REVVED UP KIDS SAFE ON CAMPUS TRAINING FOR YOUNG WOMEN
Your daughter is headed to college and her big new life. Prepare her with tools to stay safer on campus! The Revved Up Kids Safe on Campus workshop teaches young women to recognize and avoid dangerous situations and people, and to escape an attacker if necessary. The workshop includes the following components:
- Target Avoidance Training –participants learn the behaviors that make someone an easier target for violence, how to use voice and body with power to deter a threat, and the power of instinct as a safety tool. Participants learn that there are three parts of an attack, and only one of those is controlled by the attacker. The session includes an interactive discussion of specific scenarios on college campuses that can be high risk, along with tips and action steps to stay safer.
- Online Dangers – by their late teens, most girls have experienced unwanted advances or interactions in their online worlds. The session includes a discussion of online dangers and action steps to reduce risk.
- Relationship Violence – 1 in 3 girls in a dating relationship experiences abuse, and 80% of girls and women who experience physical abuse at the hands of a spouse or dating partner do not leave the relationship. The session offers a powerful statistical exercise to illustrate the pervasiveness of intimate partner violence and helps girls understand the early signs of abuse and set high standards in their dating relationships.
- Physical Self-Defense Training – Participants will learn simple defensive tactics and practice them full force during the workshop. Tactics include high, middle and low body targets.
- Improvising Weapons – Participants will learn how to use everyday items carried on their person as defensive weapons.
- Responding to a Weapon – Participants will learn how to respond to an attacker carrying a weapon.
- Review – Session ends with Q&A. All participants will receive take home review resources at the end of the workshop, including access to our practice at home self-defense video series. Parents receive follow up resources to support an ongoing dialogue with their daughters.
Note for parents: This session will include straightforward discussion of sexual violence, rape and trafficking. Exercise caution when enrolling a teen who may be triggered by this content.
